Over the years, Ford has continually recreated the Mustang to draw customer interest and spur sales. One of those variants, the 1968 California Special, is among my personal favorites. The 1968 California Special was a limited-edition Mustang produced from mid-February 1968 until early August 1968. All were hardtops. Although Ford planned to produce 5,000 California Specials for 1968, only 4,118 were built. Of those, 251 were rebranded as High Country Specials for the Colorado market. The Shelby-inspired 1968 California Special featured side scoops; trunk and end caps with integrated duck tail spoiler; pop-open gas cap; 1965 Thunderbird-style, non-sequential taillights; Lucas fog lights; custom side and trunk stripes; and California Special badging.
