Mike and Dave's 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda
The third generation of the Plymouth Barracuda was introduced in 1970. Based on the Chrysler E body, the 1970 Barracuda lineup offered a completely redesigned coupe and convertible. Customers responded with a 74% increase in Barracuda sales from 1969 to 1970. The 'Cuda model was the high performance version of the Barracuda. Quite a few customers opted for this premium model with total 1970 'Cuda sales accounting for just over 30% of total Barracuda production figures for the year.
Fortunately for us, Mike and Dave Grotto wrapped up a full rotisserie restoration of a Rallye Red 1970 'Cuda in time for our first 2025 Cars & Coffee on May 10th. Not surprisingly, this rare beauty was voted "Feature Car" by attendees. One of the really nice things about this vintage of Mopar vehicles is that each of the vehicle's options are fully documented on multiple data tags in the engine compartment and all major driveline components installed by the factory had matching serial numbers simplifying the task of determining whether a car is truly "numbers matching". The Grottos were able to confirm this 'Cuda as a 100% numbers matching find.
Among the factory options listed on the dual fender tags was a V code 440 motor with a six pack (three two barrel carburetors). Other options included the A36 performance axle package, a N96 shaker hood, an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. This car also came from the factory with the rare Gran Coupe leather interior including the overhead console. The car also has elastomeric bumpers, color matching side mirrors, a rear window defroster and six way power seats. With all the factory features, it is estimated this beauty is one of approximately 10 vehicles that exist with these options. The car is also a fully documented California car with a thick binder including the original sales invoice and window sticker backing that up.
There were a couple changes/upgrades done on this build - the factory 440 puts out 390hp with 425 ft/lbs of torque. The motor is now a full roller motor with 11.5:1 compression and 513hp and 590 ft/lbs of torque. The dash was upgraded to a factory appearing Dakota Digital gauge cluster for better visibility as well as an American Autowire wiring harness throughout. With Mike's skill set, the fit and finish on the 'Cuda is far superior than what came off the production line in 1970. The car has been delivered to the proud owner in the central valley who I imagine will get lots of smiles/mile for years to come.
